CONSERVATIVE ELECTION PLEDGES FOR HINCKLEY & BOSWORTH BOROUGH COUNCIL ELECTIONS 2023
Committed to Our Communities
Conservatives’Key Pledges to Local Residents
Protect and Enhance the Nature and Character of our communities.
We know that residents fear the loss of green fields around their community, they object to the endless expansion that stretches local services, causes traffic chaos and destroys what they love about their way of life and the places where they live.
We know that people enjoy the diversity that is available across the Borough - our mix of villages with strong rural communities, and easy access to the countryside through to our main towns with larger and more varied places for work, shopping and leisure activities. It is the very nature and character of our communities that people value the most, and our job as Councillors can be no more important than to protect that on behalf of the people who we represent.
Fix the current planning issues.
We will create a long term development plan, looking further ahead than the council does at present. This plan will shape what local people want Hinckley and Bosworth to be like for a generation and beyond. Our plan will cover housing, employment and economic growth, shopping and leisure facilities and will shape the development of the Borough for decades to come. We will put an end to the botched planning of recent years and take control of the single biggest issue that the Borough Council has to face.
Put an end to the continued expansion into the green fields surrounding our towns and villages.
These communities have taken the bulk of new housing development in recent years, because it has been the soft option, it has been easy and profitable for developers, it has been easy to justify because services already exist (no matter how stretched they become). Local people know that more new homes will cause traffic problems for them; they know it means longer queues and waiting times to see a doctor or a dentist; they know it means bigger class sizes in our schools. This has to stop, and we will make it stop.
Provide new homes in existing villages only where they are wanted by local people and come with improved services.
Some communities need to expand so that young people can move from the parental home into a home of their own. There may also be the need for additional homes for young and growing families, or more bungalows or cottages for people looking for a smaller home. We want each village to agree a plan of future housing needs so that it can expand in line with its own wishes, and in keeping with its nature and character. Our plan, which will make more use of pre-developed Brownfield sites, aims to enhance what we already have, not to destroy it.
Protect and improve key services, especially street cleaning, refuse collection and recycling.
Concerns over the future of recycling, increases in litter, dog fouling, graffiti and fly-tipping all need to be dealt with by the next elected Borough Council. A Conservative run Borough Council will target improvements to these essential services. We will ensure that the recycling service continues and is clear about what can and cannot be recycled. We will target resources to keep our streets clean and to prosecute those who commit offences by throwing litter, fly-tipping, or refusing to clean up after their dogs.
Protect the Council’s finances by reducing its debt burden.
The Lib Dem administration has raided Borough Council reserves; we pledge to provide sound financial management. A Conservative administration will urgently implement a detailed and sound fiscal plan to restore the Authority to a sound financial position and which will allow this deficit to be reduced.
Hinckley & Bosworth has a unique position at the crossroads of the history of our country. When we protect our local countryside we are protecting our national heritage. This plan has right on its side, it will deliver the living environment and services that local people deserve, and with your support we will fight to make it a success.
